Eight illegal firearms recovered in seven days

The City’s enforcement agencies made 255 arrests in the last week and issued 58 402 fines. They also recovered eight firearms in another week marked by fatalities and gun violence in a number of communities.
Law Enforcement officers recovered six firearms in the past week in Lavender Hill, Eastridge, Manenberg, Lentegeur and Atlantis.
In the Atlantis incident, they found two firearms, ammunition and drugs hidden in a public garden near a known gang premises.
Their Metro Police counterparts recovered a firearm in Hanover Park and another along the R300 near Delft.
‘These confiscations came about through proactive patrols and community tip offs. This past weekend saw another surge in gun violence in Steenberg and surrounds as well as Mitchells Plain. We need urgent and decisive action from SAPS to quell the gun violence and the loss of life. The City is willing and able to assist beyond our current supporting role. Our calls for investigative capacity for City staff is a matter of public record, but so too our other resources like CCTV, which is also available to SAPS investigators to catch and prosecute those who are terrorising our city,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
In general enforcement efforts over the past week:
• Law Enforcement officers arrested 171 suspects and issued 5 838 notices for various offences
• Metro Police officers arrested 52 suspects and issued 2 137 notices for traffic and by-law offences
• Traffic officers made 32 arrests - nine for driving under the influence of alcohol, three for reckless and negligent driving, 18 for the contravention of the Immigration Act and two for other transgressions. Officers also issued 50 427 fines, executed 1 270 warrants of arrest and impounded 178 public transport vehicles.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) recorded 1 407 incidents over the weekend, including 96 incidents of assault; 50 incidents of domestic violence, 44 motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents.
